"There's no such thing as an accident....well, almost."
Isn't it strange how our biggest disappointments can lead to our greatest triumphs? For Jeff it was a job that fell through. "I was in the Air Force for 21 years, spending 14 of those as a recruiter including recruiting doctors. I had a job arranged before I left the Air Force to set up a medical recruiting office, but I went to a career day anyway and talked to Scott Meyers, who owned a local Century 21 office. He said, 'Why don't you come join us?' I said 'Nah, I already know what I'm going to do. But IF something happens, I'll come talk to you.' Well, the company decided not to open the recruiting office, so I called Scott and said, 'Okay, I don't have a job now. Let's talk.' I started with Century 21 six months before I got out of the Air Force. And the rest is history."Return to Launch Your Career with Jeff Smith
Jeff, Broker/Agent for Century 21 Smith and Associates, may have fallen into real estate by accident, but his success was all planned.
Selling real estate seemed easy after convinding doctors to leave lucrative practices to serve in the military. When asked what made him think he could sell 15 to 20 properties a month when he started, Jeff said he never took time to think about what he couldn't do. What he thought about was what he could do. "I knew I could just work. People set goals of how much they want to sell and how many people they want to see. But there is very little one can control in this business. I can't control how many listings I get. Nor can I control how many people say 'yes" when I make phone calls. But I can control how many phone calls I make. I know how many calls it takes to get me a listing. So if I decide if it takes me 150 to 250 phone calls a day to get so many listings a month, then that's what I do."
