Basketball is arguably the most important sport in the city. San Antonio is home to two different professional basketball teams, the San Antonio Spurs, and the San Antonio Stars.
The San Antonio Spurs are a part of the Southwest Division of the Western Conference in the National Basketball Association. The team is the current champion of the NBA. The San Antonio Spurs were formerly an American Basketball Association team and are only one of the four ABA teams to make it through the ABA – NBA merger in the 1970s. The Spurs were founded in 1967 and have won 20 division titles. The team has won five NBA championships, landing them in the top five for most championship titles in history, placing only behind the Boston Celtics, the Los Angeles Lakers, and the Chicago Bulls. The Spurs play out of AT&T Center each season.
The San Antonio Silver Stars are the city’s other professional basketball team. The Stars play in the Western Conference for the Women’s National Basketball Association. The Silver Stars were originally founded in 1997, though they originated in Salt Lake City, Utah. The team moved to San Antonio in 2003, and became known as the Silver Stars in the beginning of 2014. The Silver Stars also play out of AT&T Center.
